Q: Why PHART, that's a silly name isn't it?
A: Well, it stands for PHil's Academy of Road Training. And why not PHART? It made you look, didn't it? We were going to call it Phil Holloway's Academy of Road Training And Road Safety, so think yourself lucky!.

Q: How many lessons will I need?
A: That depends. Trite I know, but true. Depends on previous experience, learning speed, private practise, hand-eye coordination, foot-brain coordination, motivation etc. You can help cut down by learning and understanding the theory. Read the 'Highway Code' and 'Driving: the Essential Skills' and perhaps the other DSA driving books available here. And then read them again. And again. And again. Ask your instructor to explain any parts that don't seem to make sense - that's what we are there for, after all.

Q: 1-hour lesson, 2-hour lesson or intensive courses?
A: Hmmm, big question, 1-hour (or less) lessons are the traditional length and are economical, bite size and allow for more private practice between lessons. However, considering that each lesson will involve settling in, a recap and debrief it leaves less time for actual instruction and driving compared to a 2-hour lesson. 2-hour lessons do need a longer attention span and won't suit everyone but provide more instruction per pound. Intensive courses offer the opportunity to pass your test very quickly but have a number of potentially serious drawbacks, for instance: If you are unsuccessful during the test that usually comes at the end of the course you will find that a lot of the learning disappears (just like cramming before any other test). So then more training (and by implication cost) is required before retesting.

Q: What car will I be driving?
A: The car you will be driving is a dual control Renault Modus. See our car page for more details.

Q: How Much do you charge?
A: £20 per hour (that's a FULL hour) of tuition for learners, £22 for PassPlus and advanced (they use more petrol due to higher road speeds).
Q: Do you do block booking discounts?
A: No, we decided (being simple) to keep the pricing simple. There is a flat rate (see above), which is competitively priced. We do PHART-Cheques for learners with 5, 10, 15 or 20 (or however you want) cheques for lessons. Please call, email or click here for details.

Q: I am definitely ready for my test but my instructor tells me I need some more lessons.
A: OK, we'll happily give our own assessment of your readiness for the test, just call or email to arrange it. Be prepared for disappointment though: most instructors are professionals and contrary to popular belief are not interested in conning you into extra lessons you don't need. It doesn't pay in the long run!

Q: I have a question and you haven't got it here!
A: Send us an email and we'll see about getting you an answer

Q: My friend says their instructor picks up their next client near the end of a lesson, they say it wastes valuable tuition time: do you do this?
A: No (unless you want to!), you'll probably hear a number of justifications for this practise (called piggy backing). For example: it helps you get used to having people in the back. You can make up your own mind whether this does help you.

Q: Do you do gift vouchers?
A: We do PHART-Cheques for learners with 5, 10, 15 or 20 cheques for lessons (or however many you want). We also do a PassPlus course cheque. Please call, email or click here for details.

Q: Can you pick me up in one place and drop me in another?
A: Yes, but you need to arrange it with your instructor well before you lesson. The time between lessons is calculated based on distance between each client drop off and the next pick up and the time of day.
